Founded in 2003, Cleveland BioLabs Inc. (CBLI) is a specialized pharmaceutical company involved in the discovery, development, and commercialization of products for cancer treatment and protection of normal tissues from exposure to radiation and other stresses. The company's proprietary technology platform is based on the ability to suppress or stimulate a basic cell defense mechanism called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Cleveland's drugs can switch apoptosis on and off by affecting key regulators of cell response to stresses, such as radiation or ischemia.
Cleveland has a collaboration agreement with Cleveland Clinic Foundation to use Cleveland Clinic's research base underlying the company's therapeutic platform strategic research partnership with Roswell Park Cancer Institute to develop its cancer and radioprotectant drug candidates and strategic partnership with ChemBridge Corporation to access a chemical library of 214,000 compounds and jointly manage the development and commercialization of compounds arising from selected projects. The company is headquartered in Buffalo, New York and had 35 employees as of December 31, 2006.
