Who says Tucson isn't a great place to be in August? Certainly not Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup, who has proclaimed August Tucson's Birthday Month leveraging an idea, first proposed by Vice-Mayor Steve Leal, that grew into a month-long birthday celebration based on support from Los Descendientes del Presidio de Tucson.
Response from the community at large has been spectacular since the celebration was announced less than a week ago, and businesses and associations are signing up daily to host an event in August that will showcase our city's uniquely rich culture, history and tradition. One of the latest additions includes Tucson Medical Center with its commitment to award special certificates to children born on Tucson's birthday, Aug. 20. The certificate will be accompanied by a copy of the original proclamation of the Presidio on Aug. 20, 1775. And it's game on for the Tucson Sidewinders who will celebrate the city's birthday at every home game this August.
Please visit www.tucsonsbirthday.org or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org if you're interested in hosting an event, or in obtaining the most up-to-date information on the rapidly growing number of celebrations.
With events aimed to please individuals of all ages, we ask the community and local media to make note of these celebrations in your calendar. We're looking forward to experiencing fantastic community attendance as we celebrate Tucson's 231st birthday.
Vice Mayor Leal and leadership of Los Descendientes will kick off the month with a media event on Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Presidio reconstruction site on the southwest corner of Church Street and Washington Street downtown.
Heading up the first year's Tucson Birthday Celebration festivities are Cele Peterson, celebrating her own 75th anniversary in business in Tucson, and Michael Duran, vice president and chief development officer, Tucson Medical Center.
