Across the country on Sunday, July 16, fans of frozen treats will be celebrating "National Ice Cream Day." But at A&W Restaurants, the party will just be getting started as the chain kicks off its summer-long "Float Your Papa Combo for Free" promotion on Sunday.
From July 16 through Sept. 2, any A&W customer who orders a Papa Burger Combo (including a Papa Burger, fries and a drink) will receive a free drink upgrade: A&W will make the drink a float, free of charge.
"The A&W brand was founded in 1919, so we have a very long and very cool relationship with ice cream," said Tim Matis, Director of Marketing for A&W Restaurants. "We consider ourselves experts in both summertime fun and Sweets & Treats(TM), and we don't think a single day is enough time to do justice to celebrating ice cream. So we're extending the celebration through Sept. 2 with our 'Float Your Papa Combo for Free' offer."
The "float upgrade offer" applies to other soft drinks as well (although the root beer float is far and away the most popular float flavor at A&W). So for those who prefer other float flavors over root beer floats, A&W will be happy to oblige.
"Visiting your hometown A&W to take advantage of the 'Float Your Papa Combo for Free' offer will be a great way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day on Sunday," Matis added. "But for those who can't make it on Sunday, A&W will be extending the celebration through the summer. Every day is 'Ice Cream Day' as far as A&W is concerned."
Customers who grew up with A&W Restaurants remember the Papa Burger, the patriarch of the Burger Family that made its debut in the 1960s but disappeared from the A&W menu at many locations years later.
A&W All American Food(R) reintroduced the Papa Burger chain-wide to rave reviews earlier this year and restaurants across the country are celebrating its reintroduction with a series of promotions throughout the summer.
The Papa Burger -- the signature burger for A&W All American Food -- is a double cheeseburger made with 100 percent U.S. beef, topped with fresh lettuce, juicy tomato, onion, pickles and a special Papa Sauce -- all on a toasted sesame seed bun.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day, and called for people to observe the day with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."
(Pricing for the A&W Papa Burger Combo and participation varies by A&W location. Hard pack ice cream may be substituted for soft serve in some locations.)
The A&W(R) brand was founded in 1919, and A&W(R) All American Food(R) is famous for serving a signature frosty mug root beer float and All American pure-beef hamburgers and hot dogs.
