Chemical Plant Security Still a Priority Despite Slow Progress Toward Industry Standards

SUGAR LAND--July 10, 2008--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The terrorist attacks in 2001 lead much of the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) to spend millions on increasing security at plant sites. The fear of additional attacks drove U.S. CPI plant owners to drastically reduce the number of people allowed into plants and to invest in surveillance equipment and extensive background checks for employees. Although many years have passed since Sept. 11, the government still has not put a definitive measure in place to ensure that all CPI plant owners are taking the same actions for safety and security. The call for inherently safer technologies by some could require major investments to make process technology changes, chemical handling routines and a more thorough technical process analysis that takes a great deal of time and money.
