It was another night of magic for the indices in Japan, as the latest gains mark a 10% jump in the Nikkei over the last four trading sessions. The euphoria wasn’t been able to spread to Europe, but traders woke up late in the session to pull the U.S. markets higher. Volume was the lightest we’ve seen in a while.
As for today’s names in the news, General Electric (GE) surprised some analysts today as the company is paying a pretty premium to get in the oil and gas services equipment niche, buying Lufkin Industries (LUFK) in a $3.3 billion deal.
As far as Wall Street analyst calls go, positive chatter helped stocks like W.W. Grainger (GWW), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Apple (AAPL) pace the gains.. On the flipside, we saw red for stocks like Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), L-3 Communications (LLL), and Vail Mountain Resorts (MTN), following cautious commentary.The Market That Mimics a Broadway Show
With each passing day in the global markets, we see plenty of scenes that can be described as resembling a Broadway play. There is hope (economic data looking better), sadness (austerity measures, depositors seeing their accounts getting pilfered in Cyprus, job cuts as doing “more with less” is part of today’s corporate commandments), euphoria (momentum stocks jumping to insane valuations and analysts trying to keep up with higher and higher price targets), and shock (how quickly stocks can erode in a matter of months, with Apple being the obvious recent case).
Through all the emotional swings of investor reactions, there is the usual calmness of income investors who patiently wait for opportunities to plug away at their long-term approach. It’s great to be a part of this group for the most part.
