Many people are afraid of public speaking. It’s something that’s not going to go away and with wedding season quickly approaching, best man speeches (and maid of honor speeches) are going to need some fine tuning for the big day. You can do it.” Laugh Staff would also recommend folding the speech and keeping it in your pocket. “I memorize all of my stand-up sets,” said Laugh Staff consultant Kali Fencl. “But I also keep my set list in my back pocket and sometimes I also write notes on the palms of my hands. I have never needed any of that, but it’s kind of like a security blanket for speeches.”
Another tip for giving a best man speech is to talk to the DJ beforehand. “Get a feel for the mic before you stand up,” said Laugh Staff co-founder Josh Womack. “See how far away from your face it needs to be so there’s no feedback and know where the on/off switch is just in case you accidentally turn it off.”
There is no need to rush through the speech. No one is at the reception to clock the best man’s speech time. Memorizing the speech and maintaining a steady pace is how a best man can control the room. There are some excellent jokes in that speech - make sure everyone at the reception has time to fully appreciate them.
Do not consume too much alcohol before giving a speech. It will throw off everything discussed above. Do not become the next wedding fail.
Finally, have fun! These are close family and friends. No one came to this wedding to see the best man or maid of honor fail. Everyone is on the same team cheering for a happy marriage for the bride and groom. Keep that in mind and don’t sweat it too much.
