Fight Fire with Fire: Instructor-led Crowdsourcing of Assessment Banks Reduces Student Cheating

PR Log - Apr 01, 2013 - Via Response, a pioneer in cloud-based “Bring Your Own Device” student engagement platforms, is introducing an innovative way to reduce cheating at higher education institutions. Derrick Meer, President of Via Response is presenting the webinar, “Fight Fire with Fire: Instructor-led Crowdsourcing of Assessment Banks Reduces Student Cheating” on Wednesday, April 24th 2013 from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM EDT.

An article in the Education Portal reported “back in 1940, only 20% of college students admitted to cheating during their academic careers. Today that number has increased to a range of 75%-98%”. With schools increasing their offerings of hybrid, blended learning, MOOC, and online classes, cheating has become easy, sophisticated and prevalent. One popular new phenomenon for students is published content crowdsourcing. In the webinar, Derrick will explain how students are using the Internet to crowdsource publisher-produced question banks within hours of their release, which reduces their effectiveness as assessment tools.

“When we started Via in 2010, we saw a very fragmented market concerning assessments with limited ability for educators to control the delivery of questions to their student populations,” said Meer. “Textbook publishers provided asynchronous methods of delivery but offered little to no flexibility with questions. It was a “take it or leave it” approach that was very closed in and proprietary”. In the end, none of the first generation systems allowed for a flexible and extensible system to foster collaboration among instructors.”

To help give instructors a leg up, Via Response developed a Question and Assessment Manager within its mobile-based student engagement software, enabling instructors to create custom questions that complement their course study and lectures. These custom questions are used to poll or quiz students throughout the term to ensure the content being presented is retained. The risk of students sharing these assessments to cheat on quizzes is dramatically reduced as the questions used are designed and controlled by instructors, and can easily vary across lectures and course sections, unlike those found in textbooks.

The webinar will be hosted by Today’s Campus, a premier feature magazine covering the people, companies and campuses that are redefining best business practices in higher education. Instructors and school administrators are encouraged to attend this webinar to learn more about the benefits related to instructor-led crowdsourcing of assessment banks.
