In keeping with the April Fools’ day fun, YouTube, the site, which was launched in 2005, announced on Saturday that it will youTube the site on April 1, saying “It’s finally time to pick the winner.” The site will stop taking submissions on Tuesday, April 2 at midnight and close down. All videos will be deleted. You took note of that April 1 date, right?
Google loves itself a good April Fool’s Joke, today it also announced “Google Nose,” a search service that is powered by smell. So, no, YouTube, which Google bought for $1.65 billion in 2006, is not closing – who said geeks don’t have a sense of humor?
YouTube said it would “no longer be accepting entries.” The website said that after 8 years, it was time to review all the videos uploaded to the site and select a winner.
“We are so close to the end,” Tom Liston, communications director at YouTube, explains in the video. “Tonight at midnight, YouTube.com will no longer be accepting entries. After eight amazing years, it’s finally time to review everything that has been uploaded to our site and begin the process of selecting a winner.”
The YouTube Winner video explains that the last 9 years of YouTube was really a contest and that they YouTube will shutdown for the next ten years to pick the best video on the site. They enlisted a number of popular YouTube celebrities to be in the video and beg you to vote for them—including the now older kids from one of the most popular YouTube videos, “Charlie Bit My Finger.”
Along with this video is the YouTube “nominee announcement” video. On this YouTube page it claims that nominees will be announced for 12 hours every day over the next two years. It begins April 1, at 9am PT. I can’t wait to see what shows up.
