I have always been a somewhat active person. My father is a retired professional soccer player and my mother is in fairly good shape. However, I ate a lot of unhealthy comfort foods with my family. These meals consisted of large portions of high fats foods which eventually resulted in significant weight gain.
It was during my late twenties that I received the shocking diagnosis that I had lymphoma. As if this wasn’t tragic enough, I was also diagnosed with a hyperactive thyroid. My cancer treatment consisted of an aggressive combination of chemotherapy and radiation sessions, and a stem cell transplant. This sequence of treatment lasted for a year and half with breaks between each session. As a result of the cancer treatment, my thyroid was greatly effected and became nonfunctional. Although my thyroid is functioning at 10%, it is still considered nonfunctional. I take daily medication to maintain thyroid function and a daily dose of a chemotherapy drug to keep my lymphoma in remission. Both medications have weight related and water retention side effects. Needless to say, I knew I had to address this weight issue.
I came across an ad for “SHAPES ‘R IN” in the local newspaper and contacted Jose Fuentes. Jose invited me to visit him at his gym in Denville, New Jersey to discuss how to address my weight issue. He discussed the benefits of his new program, “The Tornado Weight Loss System”(http://www.shapesrin.com/tornadotraining.html) and how it can help post-cancer patients like me. Right then and there, I decided to sign up for the 12-week “Tornado Weight Loss System Program”.
I weighed in at over 280 pounds on the first day of the program. This was the heaviest weight I had ever been. Seeing what I actually weighed, confirmed that I had made the right decision in signing up for the program. I was realistic enough to know that I had a long road ahead of me to reach my goals. The only way to face this challenge was to deal with it one day at a time. I would approach each day with the knowledge that making the right decisions each day would bring me to my ultimate goal. So far I have lost over 60 pounds!
Based on my experience, I believe that the exercise program and eating regiment that I am following, has helped offset the water retention side effects of the chemotherapy. Thanks to Jose Fuentes, I have learned the importance of lifting weights, keeping my body functional, and how muscle building is important for all activities. His Tornado Program has a unique combination of aerobic exercises that have really helped with my energy. Cancer destroys your body from the inside out and the treatments also take a toll on your body. When I started the program, I could barely do 4 step-ups on the big tractor tire that I use to do my exercise routine. Running for just one minute, made my body feel like I was dying. However, within a couple of weeks, I was running for 10 minutes straight, doing cardio at a rapid pace and regular pushups!
I didn’t find the nutritional segment of his program difficult. His four-stage plan teaches you how to detox, eliminate excess body fluids, and the correct portion control of food. Eating at the proper time and portion control has been a catalyst for my success. I feel fortunate to have been paired with an exceptional Trainer/Nutritional Consultant! Jose has taught me to look at things realistically and strategically. He has provided me with an effective and solid “attack plan” to help reach my goals and encouraged me along the way. I know that the accountability and encouragement that I receive from our weekly meetings has given me the constant motivation I needed to achieve the success I have experienced so far.
