WellPoint has announced the results of its 2012 support for nonprofits, events, and programs that address community health needs. Working through the WellPoint Foundation, the company has granted $25 million to support initiatives at the local, regional, and national levels. Major activities include work with the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and the Oasis Institute. On its annual Community Service Day, 3,500 WellPoint associates, friends, and family members volunteered at 170 nonprofit associations across the country. In addition, for its annual Associate Giving Campaign, the company matched employee donations to generate $6.7 million for six charities: the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, Community Health Charities, Feeding America, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the United Way.
The Verizon Foundation has joined the National Council on Aging’s Self-Management Alliance, an initiative that brings together businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies to work toward making self-management an integral part of health care. The NCOA works to improve the independence of millions of older adults with multiple chronic conditions, which account for the fastest growing portion of the nation’s health care costs. The Verizon Foundation will invest nearly $13 million in grants and in-kind technology to fund nonprofit health care organizations with new health information technologies.
