As a movie buff, I see all types of movies each year: small indie films, big blockbusters, documentaries, foreign films, etc. While I enjoy most, I do tend to cringe when a popular movie like The Fugitive or The Constant Gardener has a plot based on bad behaviors by a purported evil pharmaceutical company. Well, more cringing is in store for me as a new film, Side Effects opens this week. Directed by the Oscar award winning director, Steven Soderbergh (Traffic), Side Effects is about a depressed woman who takes a fictional drug, “Ablixa”. Apparently, the drug may be the cause of this woman’s committing a horrific crime. The prescribing doctor, of course, is at fault for enriching himself by pushing new drugs for Big Pharma.
