Novo Nordisk Wins Top award; Recondo Tech Gets $20 Million; FDA Urges New Labels for Healthy Food Choices - Health Minute for January 29, 2013

Novo Nordisk has received the top position in the Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology industry group of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World index, published annually by Corporate Knights, a Canadian magazine. Out of 12 key performance indicators, Novo Nordisk received a Best Performance rating on energy use and greenhouse gas emissions as a percentage of revenue, CEO compensation as a percentage of average employee pay, and the mechanisms that link senior executive pay to clean capitalism targets.  Overall, Novo Nordisk ranked fifth on the 2013 list of global sustainable companies.

Recondo Technology, a healthcare software and cloud solutions company, has received a $20 million investment from Bregal Sagemount to accelerate its growth. Recondo provides software and services including payments, insurance verification, and revenue recovery to 450 U.S. hospitals. The company increased revenue in fiscal year 2012 by 94 percent.

A new study from the Food and Drug Administration finds that current food labels are too confusing for most consumers. The FDA surveyed 9,500 U.S. adults, showing them food labels that presented calories and nutrients per serving or per container. Researchers found that people were best at comparing the healthfulness of products when the nutrition facts were presented for the entire container's worth of food, or for both one serving and the entire container. This eliminated the need to multiply the nutrition facts listed by the number of servings per package if people want to eat it all. Different labels on food that clearly display the total number of calories and nutrients in the entire package, rather than just part of it, should help people make healthier food choices, according to the study.
