Recently, Abbott Laboratories broke itself up into two parts: Abbott, a diversified medical products company and AbbVie, a research based pharmaceutical company. The jewel of the new pharma company is Humira, an antibody that blocks a mediator known as TNF-alpha and is an important treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as well as other immunological disorders. It is also now the world’s top selling drug with 2012 sales estimated to be in excess of $9 billion.
