Moving Beyond Coal

Interview with Jack Darin of the Illinois Sierra Club

SOURCE: Illinois Environmental Council

DESCRIPTION:

In 1892, conservationist John Muir, along with many of his supporters, founded the Sierra Club.  The Sierra Club (http://www.sierraclub.org/) continues to tackle our Nation’s – and the world’s – most pressing environmental issues. The Sierra Club’s “Beyond Coal” campaign (http://www.beyondcoal.org/) strives to move the United States away from coal-powered energy and toward renewables, such as solar and wind. So far, the Beyond Coal campaign has stopped over 150 proposed coal-fired power plants! In this video, the Director of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club, Jack Darin, explains how the Beyond Coal campaign has reached the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago, and tells us if clean coal really exists.

This year (2012), the Sierra Club helped shut down two of Chicago’s dirtiest coal power plants. Working with citizens living around the plants, the Sierra Club formed a powerful coalition to close these plants that were causing asthma and other health problems. Although it took some time, the mission was ultimately accomplished! Against what the coal industry would like us to believe, there is no such thing as clean coal. From the beginning to the end of the coal lifecycle – from digging the coal out of the ground to burying its waste – there are harmful effects on the environment and on human health. With so many different reasons and opportunities to move beyond coal, now is the time for Illinois to adopt more renewable energy sources. Illinois is already heading in the right direction, as 20,000 jobs in wind and solar power in Illinois were created in the past few years. However, there is still much to be done. Check out the Sierra Club, Illinois Chapter (http://illinois.sierraclub.org/) today and see what you can do to help to move Illinois beyond coal!
