250 School Children Die Needlessly Every Year
PR Log - Dec 07, 2012 - Merseyside, UK -- Each year over 250 of our children die each year due to undiagnosed cardiac arrest.  Tragically, some of them suffer an arrest in schools, the very place we believe them to be safe, yet we could save so many of these children for the cost of 2p per student a week!

Sudden cardiac arrest has been brought to our attention recently by the tragedy turned miracle of Fabrice Muamba, who brought the capacity crowd at a premier league football match to a standstill for 78 minutes when he practically died on the pitch of a heart seizure, highlighting the fact that you don't have to be old to suffer a cardiac arrest.

Now, thankfully he has fully recovered, and recently brought tears to everyone's eyes by getting married. Yet if the physio s on the pitch did not have an AED (Automated External Device) then that story could have ended much more tragically. The defibrillator is a small portable device, simple and easy to use with basic training.

Yet the government has been slow to insist all schools have an AED on hand with the first aid kit. Fabrice Muamba has recently visited parliament to help the cause of parents, school teachers and school governors, including 60 MPs to get a law passed making it mandatory.

To this day ONLY 80 of around 30,000 SCHOOLS in the UK carry an AED. Many public buildings including railways stations, shopping centres and football grounds must have defibrillators on site that can be used to support high quality CPR and restart the hearts of the 300,000 people who suffer cardiac arrest in the UK each year.

Dr Jan Till, a consultant paediatric electro physiology cardiologist at the Royal Brompton hospital,
added: “A sudden cardiac arrest in a child is devastating and extremely difficult for all concerned.
An AED gives that child a lifeline, and parents and teachers know that they have done everything
possible to increase the chance of that child surviving.”

If you are a parent may we suggest contacting your school to ask if they have an AED?

Contact Life Choice to see how to buy an AED and to have your school trained in their use so you never have to say 'if only”…
