A New Study Shows the Effects of Exercising Outdoors, and GlaxoSmithKline Launches a Patient Centered Medical Program - Health Minute for December 3, 2012

New research from Belgium shows that people who live in a city and exercise outdoors have higher levels of inflammation and lower scores on cognitive tests than those who exercise outside in the suburbs. Higher levels of air pollution in the city prevented participants in the study from gaining exercise-induced benefits such as brain plasticity, comprehension, and mental health. The urban group also had higher blood levels of some inflammation markers. Tips for effective outdoor exercise include braving wind and rain, which blow away air pollution; avoiding rush hour and more pollution; and exercising in a park.

GlaxoSmithKline has begun a program for its North Carolina employees to provide a Patient Centered Medical Home program, in partnership with Community Care of North Carolina. The initiative, called “North Carolina First in Health,” offers team-based, holistic care, with a focus on care management. GSK’s goal is to provide higher quality care at a lower cost by a delivery that is more coordinated, connected, proactive and population based.
