With Thanksgiving last week and November drawing to a close, I’m reflecting back on all the things I’m grateful for. This year, participating in the growing men’s health charity, Movember, tops the list of experiences I’m glad to have been a part of. As a first time participant and Movember team leader I had the opportunity to experience supporting a great cause while meeting fun new people, with a wonderful sense of humor. Funds and awareness about men’s health issues weren’t the only thing on the rise this year, in addition to stylish moustaches, traffic spiked on key dates throughout November.

As you can see in the graph below, interest in Movember picked-up on Monday October the 29th and Thursday November 1st. Likely with early Movember participant registrations on Monday and the shave down events on Thursday Nov 1st. Here in Boston, a few Movember local committee members met-up at State Street Barbers to start the month off clean-shaven with a straight-razor shave.

We can also see the impact that the presence of moustaches had at the Thanksgiving table this year, with a rise in reach and attention on the 25th and 26th of the month.

Movember.com - Daily Reach vs. Daily Attention
In addition to some strong daily activity, some of the top engaging keywords for Movember.com include brand terms like Movember, movember.com, and movember rules driving engagment and had a high percentage of search referral share. However the most interesting and engaging term in this is “KISW Movember”. After a bit of research, I found out that KISW Rock is a radio station in Seattle that opened their team up to the “Men’s Room” show listeners. Doing so allowed them to build the mighty KISW Men’s Room movember team of over 600 MoBros and MoSistas, raising over $18,700 to date! Illustrating that having the right audience, an important message, and an active community can made a big impact on Men’s Health awareness and non-profit fundraising efforts. Hats off to KISW Rock and their team captain Ben the Psycho for corralling his listeners and encouraging them to help in the fight to crush cancer!

Facinated by moustaches, and want to learn more about Movember? Check out our post from 2010 via Karen Costa, MoSista and now the East Coast Community Manager for Movember!

“Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a mustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean-shaven and then grow a mustache for the entire month. The mustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a mustache for 30 days. Women, known as Mo Sistas support the men’s efforts and help raise funds.” Quote taken from previous post.
