2012 has seen many Australian retailers experience an up and down year of sales, however the online retail report recently published brings hope to online retailers. The report delivers a look into how the online shopping market in Australia has developed, from both a supply and demand perspective within the 2011 year.
Key findings from the report include:
- Businesses are increasing engagement with consumers via the internet: 59% of Australian small to medium enterprises had taken orders online from consumers at April 2011
- In the six months to April 2011, 59% of adults went online to purchase a good or service, compared to 53% in the six months to November 2009
- Within the six months to April 2011, approximately 62% of internet users purchased a good or service online
- 86% of people who have higher incomes ($150,000 or more per annum) - were more likely to have shopped online
The report has also solidified retailers suspected reasons as to why an increase of Australians shop online with convenience and price identified as the main reasons.
Owner of an online retail store My Favourite, Phoebe Olsen says these findings give Australian online retailers a much needed lift ahead of the Christmas holiday fast approaching. "Working within the retail spectrum is at times unpredictable, so reading these positive findings about the online behaviour of consumers bring hope for a busy and profitable few months ahead."
The report also discovered that the main reasons a percentage of people chose to stay with the traditional retailers is due to a 'lack of trust' of the online systems, 'no need' and a preference to shop in store.
The report also found that the proportion of online shoppers accessing overseas websites increased from 19% to 29% during the period from November 2009 to April 2011. This increase is likely due to an increase in the Australian dollar. Despite these statistics, the report also discovered that 30% of Australians are continuing to buy from Australian websites with supporting local industries being the main reason.
"Consumers will shop from overseas buyers; however, it is fantastic to see that Australians are recognising the importance of keeping it local and continuing to support the Australian economy." Mrs Olsen said.
