Fomento Economico Mexicano, better known as Femsa (FMX), is testing its chops in the retail pharmacy business. On Nov. 9, the leading bottler and distributor of Coca-Cola (KO)-made beverages in Mexico and eight more countries announced that its Femsa Comercio retail subsidiary will buy a 75% stake in Farmacias YZA, a leading drugstore chain of 333 stores in southeastern Mexico. Femsa expects the transaction to close in the first quarter of 2013.
