With a 50% youth unemployment rate, support for the mine is estimated at 80%. Image: http://prospectingnews.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/PN21.jpg
“The residents are overwhelmingly in favour of this project” stated Magdalena Gómez Marentes, a 28-year-old unemployed mother, “The Salave Gold Mine will create many direct jobs, and give a great benefit to the existing businesses in Tapia”. Construction of the mine is expected to create 850 jobs. Once operating, the mine will generate 250 direct jobs and another 250 indirectly. Astur Gold will pay a royalty of 3% of the capex of the mine to the town of Tapia, which will eliminate half the town’s current debt. One pro-mine protestor commented in the Spanish press: “It is very sad to live a life of misery on a bed of gold.” “I’ve been very clear with the people of Tapia that I cannot build this mine without their support,” explains Astur Gold CEO Cary Pinkowski, “Our technical team relocated from Oviedo to work directly in the village of Tapia. Throughout the construction and operation of the mine, our commitment is to hire as many local employees as possible.” Salave project drill highlights include: 37 meters of 16g/t, 22 meters of 38g/t, 18 meters of 29g/t and 62m of 5g/t. Astur Gold recently hosted a ceremony in Tapia for 300 graduates of its health and safety program. Community support has risen steadily to over 80%. Astur Gold has received over 7,000 resumes. The Salave and other areas in Asturias have a long history of gold mining dating back to the first century A.D. Banners at the demonstration read, “”For our future” “We want to work!” “Yes on Salave gold mine.” The Regional Minister of Development, Planning and Environment, Belén Fernández, has promised a decision on the Salave EIA by the end of November, 2012. A positive decision will trigger the commencement of mine construction. Roberto Hartasánchez, President of the Environmental Organization FAPAS with over 17,000 members stated in May, 2012, “Astur Gold’s underground plan is fully compatible with environmental values of the region.” In 2012 Spaniards withdrew more than 100 billion euros from national banks and 30,000 Spaniards registered to work in Britain. “It seems as if everyone I know in Spain is getting on an EasyJet to come to London and open a bank account,” stated a London Banker. For those unwilling to leave, the Salave Gold Project is a beacon of light. “Nothing is going to shut us up”, declared pro-mine demonstrator Juan Carlos Bermúdez, a 41-year-old construction worker, “I have a wife and a daughter and I need to work".
