SDR-WInnComm 2013 to Feature Workshops on White Space, LTE, Public Safety
PR Log - Nov 15, 2012 - The Wireless Innovation Forum (http://www.WirelessInnovation.org), today announced more information on workshops to be held at its annual Wireless Innovation Forum Conference on Communications Technologies and Software Defined Radio (SDR - WInnComm). The premier event for the software defined radio, cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access communities, SDR-WInnComm will be held 8-11 January 2013 in Washington, D.C. Each day of this conference will feature keynotes by industry leaders, workshops, tutorials, and technical presentations. The event also touts an exposition, technology showcase and concurrent working meetings of the working and special interest groups of the Forum. This year’s event will also be held in conjunction with the IEEE DySPAN Standards Committee.
Workshops kick off on Tuesday, 8 November with keynotes by Julius Knapp, Chief of the Office of Engineering and Technology, Federal Communications Commission, and Michael Calabrese, Senior Research Fellow, New America Foundation, followed by a panel discussing the future of white space with Peter Stanforth, CTO Spectrum Bridge moderating. Panelists include Milind Buddhikot (Alcatel/Lucent), Angelo Cuffaro (Interditigal), and William Webb (Neul).
Two sessions focus on Receiver Specs to Enable DSA, chaired by Bruce Oberlies (Motorola Solutions). The sessions will explore the need for receiver specifications to help to open opportunities for Dynamic Spectrum Access. It will examine the pros and cons of receiver specifications from a commercial, regulatory and policy standpoint to enable DSA, and will feature speakers Bruce Mueller (Motorola Solutions), Eric Hagerson (T-Mobile), John Stine (MITRE), Robert Pavlak (FCC OET), and Michael Tseytlin (LightSquared).
Wednesday’s workshop focuses on “LTE and Beyond,” chaired by Manuel Uhm (Coherent Logix). Speakers and topics include:
● Stéphane Téral, Infonetics, on "LTE-Advanced: What’s the Big Deal and How Does SDR/CR Fit?" Abstract: While LTE is enabling a new wave of connectivity, there is yet another standard, LTE-Advanced, that is being designed to support yet a new wave. What can LTE-Advanced do that LTE cannot and how can SDR or CR technology enable those features or ease the transition? ● Onur Altintas, Toyota ITC, on “LTE in Connected Car” Abstract: The connected car is a vision that is rapidly becoming reality. LTE, with its available bandwidth, is a key piece to that puzzle. However, the lifespan of a typical car can exceed the deployment rate of an air interface. Furthermore, new services can be made available if the infotainment system of the car is software defined. SDR technology can help to bridge this gap between the vision and the lifespan. ● Srikathyayani Srikanteswara, Intel on “5G: What’s Next for Wireless Communications?” Abstract: With all the attention on LTE and the new services and applications it can enable, it is worth taking a peek into the future to see what’s after LTE and even LTE-Advanced. What does 5G hold in store for us and what is the role of SDR and CR in supporting that vision? ● Scott Leubner, Harris on "LTE in and Secure Android in the Battlefield" Abstract: While the commercial world is rolling out LTE, the defense industry is also investigating ways to leverage LTE and its broad ecosystem. However, one of the major concerns is how to make commercial cellphones running LTE and Android secure enough for military use. How is this being addressed and are there commercial opportunities to leverage this approach to address current commercial security concerns?
Public safety is the focus on Thursday, 10 November, with sessions on “User Requirements for Public Safety,” featuring a keynote by Terry Hall (APCO) on “Implementing LTE for Public safety.” Speakers this session include Al Sadowski(North Carolina State Highway Patrol), Rob Stafford (PSCR), and Deputy Chief Ed Reyes (Alexandria Police Department). The next session, “Using LTE for Public Safety,” features a keynote by Jeff Reed (Virginia Tech) and speakers Daniel Devasirvatham (SAIC) on “Restoring LTE Communications following a Disaster,” Charles Shaughnessy (Harris Corporation) and Joe Heaps (National Institute of Justice).
