MiTek®, a Berkshire Hathaway company (NYSE: BRK-A, NYSE: BRK-B), announced today that it was honored to be part of the BCMC Build 2012 project, which recently framed and weathered-in a new home for a New Orleans family.
The BCMC Build 2012 project was part of the recent Building Component Manufacturers Conference (BCMC) in New Orleans, and this was the third year in a row that volunteers from the component manufacturing industry have contributed materials and labor while at the Conference to construct a new home for a deserving, hard-working family.
BCMC Build 2012 was undertaken in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, New Orleans and the Structural Building Components Association (SBCA). The recipients of the home, Karen and Theodore Williams, are life-long residents of New Orleans who had lost their home to Katrina. Gregg Renner, VP, Marketing for MiTek USA, was chairman of the BCMC Build 2012 event. MiTek was instrumental in producing a short documentary about BCMC Build 2012 and the Williams family, available at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxUA7TnnRnE
Completely framed and weathered-in over just one and one-half days, the BCMC Build 2012 Habitat for Humanity project was also constructed as a showcase for the efficiency that can be achieved in wood-frame construction through the use of components (roof trusses, floor trusses, and wall panels) and the software that guides their design and manufacture. BCMC Build 2012 was made possible through the generous material and labor contributions of a number of organizations, including Southern Components, Inc. (through the donation of roof trusses), Clearspan Components, Inc. (wall panels), Panel Truss Texas, Inc. (floor systems), Huber Engineered Woods, LLC (sheathing), Cargotec, USA (crane), Boise Cascade (LVLs), Hull & Associates (framing), USP Structural Connectors (construction hardware), and MiTek Industries, Inc.
“As a teenager, I had many hardships. But now, I am a proud mother of three beautiful children and two step-children. Therefore, we have five in all, and 7 grandchildren, too. What a blessing. I am presently employed at LSUHSC and my husband is a proud veteran. We have always wanted to be homeowners. Habitat for Humanity has allowed us to do just that. Since we have been part of this caring organization, our lives have taken a 360. Not only does Habitat help low-income families, they also build brand new lives. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity for making our dreams come true,” said Karen Williams, the occupant of the new Habitat for Humanity home.
“It’s humbling and rewarding to be part of a project like this, and to see that a little generosity and goodwill can make truly meaningful and long-lasting changes in people’s lives,” said MiTek’s Gregg Renner, chairman of BCMC Build 2012. “MiTek is honored to have played a role in making dreams come true for the Williams family.”
