Summary

Convenience remains key

The often-cited cash-rich time-poor society in the UK continues to work in favour of packaged food in 2005. Overall, sales are expected to continue the slow growth of previous years, mainly driven by bakery, dairy, ready meals and chilled processed food. These all cater to the needs of consumers who are increasingly on the go, with less time available to prepare food.

Proof of this trend can be found in the rapid growth of 24-hour convenience stores, which opened up under the banners of Tesco and Sainsbury across the country, with most of their retail space dedicated to sweet and savoury snacks, ready meals and chilled processed food. Marks & Spencer's Simply Food also provides a good example of this trend. While any kind of Italian, British or Oriental dinner or snack can be picked up, the merchandise range for normal staple food is small.
