“It’s Game-On for Garbage in South Florida” Second Florida Municipality Opts in to Sun Bergeron’s Monopoly Breaking Garbage Contract

The Town of Davie had a vision. A vision to offer its taxpayer’s better price breaks and to provide them with a more sustainable environment for a cleaner, greener future. This vision became reality on November 7, 2012 as Davie became the second municipality in Broward County to take advantage of the competitive and transparent procurement process undertaken by the City of Miramar to award Sun Bergeron its Solid Waste Disposal contract. Piggy-backing on the Miramar contract will entitle the Town of Davie to receive new revenue in excess of three quarters of a million dollars for the total five-year term of the agreement based on projected revenue share for the Town at the $2 per ton rate agreed with Miramar.

With the award of this contract, Davie has piggy-backed on what has been the culmination of nearly two years of work by the City of Miramar who, after 26 years of limitations through a single contract with Wheelabrator Technologies, a subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE: WM), identified a window of opportunity to engage in free market options and explore new ways to generate competition in the marketplace and savings in the area of solid waste management for Broward County’s municipalities and residents.

"We are constantly looking for ways to improve our town and save money for our residents, and this opportunity presented itself as just that," said Mayor Judy Paul, Town of Davie. "We think Miramar did a wonderful job with their transparent and inclusive procurement process."

The financial benefits that will be passed on to the residents are evident. However, perhaps even more importantly to the Town of Davie, are the environmental benefits they can expect to see under the new contract. With a ‘Zero Waste’ commitment, a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused and that the amount of solid waste sent to landfills or incinerators is minimal, Sun Bergeron is looking to support Davie in achieving its vision to give its citizens a cleaner, greener future.

With its corporate headquarters in the Town of Davie, Sun Bergeron is especially committed to supporting Davie in achieving Florida’s state recycling rate goal of 75%. “This decision is an important one for Davie and it is our true belief that Davie will be one of the first municipalities in the state to not only meet, but exceed this recycling goal through this new contract with Sun Bergeron,” said Ron Bergeron Sr., President, Sun Bergeron.

Unlike its competitors, Sun Bergeron does not use an incineration-only process for the disposal of municipal solid waste. Instead, all municipal solid waste received at the transfer station is quickly and efficiently moved from the tipping floor onto the processing system. The processable waste is sorted and all material with recyclable value is removed and separated into temporary storage bunkers. From the storage bunkers, materials are periodically removed with equipment and loaded directly into transfer and roll-off containers with recyclable materials hauled directly to the end markets. Any residual from the sorting process is captured and loaded into a separate roll-off container for disposal at one of the disposal facilities. This method minimizes the amount of waste to be incinerated or landfilled and optimizes the amount to be recycled.

Sun Bergeron is a joint venture between Sun Recycling and Bergeron Environmental Services operating together to achieve zero waste. Combined, Sun Bergeron has over 35 years experience in the waste and recycling industry and a proven history in logistics and disaster recovery including the BP Oil Spill clean-up in 2010. Pioneering innovation in the waste and recycling industry, Sun Bergeron is headquartered in the Town of Davie, Broward County, Florida. The more than 500 employees that represent Sun Bergeron are dedicated to the environment and currently recycle in excess of 75% of the solid waste materials they process, a state mandated goal by 2020.
