KCMA Launches Environmental Stewardship Program; New Certification Program Encourages Environmentally Sound Policies and Practices

The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) has developed an Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) with defined certification requirements to enable cabinet manufacturers to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to sound environmental practices and sustainability.

The current good health of cabinet manufacturers and their key suppliers is a reflection of the positive environmental management systems developed over many years. Approximately eighty percent of cabinets today are constructed of wood and wood parts. Virtually all cabinetry combine solid and engineered wood products to produce the many durable, practical and fashionable choices available to consumers today. Sound environmental practices are key to the growth and continued success of this USA/North American-based industry.

The ESP is intended to help maintain the industry's key renewable resource (wood) and encourage growth in sustainable business practices. Today's global marketplace demands low cost and value in consumer products. To succeed, all companies must constantly increase value and reduce costs, through waste reduction and implementation of sustainable practices in all that they do.

The ESP is a product of the effort of many KCMA volunteers and industry partners over more than two years of work. The ESP is a work-in-progress and will be updated as needed to reflect new processes, materials, procedures and regulations.

This new certification program enables cabinet manufacturers to demonstrate their commitment to sound environmental management and sustainable practices through a rigorous compliance review. Program participants will qualify for official certification by accumulating points in the areas of Air Quality, Product Resource Management, Process Resource Management, Environmental Stewardship, and Community Relations. Participants who demonstrate compliance in these categories will receive the official ESP designation and will be awarded the ESP certification seal to display on their products. Eight KCMA member companies already have completed the application process.

The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA), headquartered in Reston, Virginia, is the principal trade association in the United States for manufacturers of kitchen cabinets and bath vanities, countertop and decorative laminate products, and suppliers to the industry. KCMA is committed to excellence in manufacturing through continued quality, advocacy and leadership. For more information, visit www.kcma.org or call (703) 264-1690.
