Tesla CEO says they’ve built 1,000 Model S bodies
Tesla's CEO Elon Musk says Tesla has now assembled 1,000 bodies for its Model S electric car. The company is going through a difficult period right now of needing to ramp up production quickly for the remainder of 2012.

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk says that the company has completed building the 1,000th body of its Model S electric cars, according to a tweet (hat tip Green Car Reports). Musk included a photo of the 1,000th car shell surrounded by Tesla employees and said: “V proud of Tesla team for completing 1000th Model S body. More cars made this month than entire rest of year.”

Tesla is currently going through a difficult period where it needs to scale up production of the Model S at a pretty rapid rate. Tesla said about a month ago that it was about four to five weeks behind schedule for its 2012 delivery goals for the Model S. As of September 23, Tesla said it had produced 255 completed Model S cars, delivered 132 of those cars to customers, and estimated it will be able to make 300 Model S cars in the third quarter, and deliver 200 to 225 of those to customers. Tesla also estimated it can eventually get to a weekly production rate of 400 Model S vehicles before the end of 2012, which could lead to between 2,500 to 3,000 cars made in the fourth quarter.

Those new figures are a downgrade from the company’s previous plan to produce and deliver 5,000 of the Model S cars before the end of the year. Because of the slower schedule Tesla had to cut its revenue forecast. Reservations are high for Model S, though, and Tesla says as of September 23 it had 13,000 reservations minus its deliveries.
