Aussie Kids in World First: One Million Minutes of Literacy!
PR Log - Oct 22, 2012 - Australia is proving to be a nation of Word Maniacs!
Over 24,000 kids across Australia have generated more than ONE MILLION minutes of literacy fun since September 17, thanks to Literacy Planet and Nickelodeon.
The National Word Mania Challenge came about when these two companies recognised a shared philosophy: that kids learn better when they're enjoying themselves. Literacy Planet’s CEO, Chris Roberts said, “We believe that a life-long love of reading and writing is a precious gift to give a child. The best way to engage today’s kids in learning is through games they love to play. That’s why we created the Word Mania Challenge.”
More than 2,300 Aussie Schools are currently represented in the challenge, with students across the nation poised to compete. The objective is to see who can build the most words in three minutes, and the creators of the challenge couldn’t be more delighted with the results so far.
“We set a lofty target of One Million minutes of literacy, and today we have exceeded that number! Thanks to all the teachers, parents and kids involved, you truly are word maniacs!”
How to get involved:
Registration is FREE and open until Friday October 26 at www.wordmania.com.au. The official competition began today (October 22). Winners will receive cool prizes like iPads, iPods and Nickelodeon prize packs
It's fun to play, not just to win!
Mr Roberts said, “In developing the challenge, it was important to us that students were rewarded and recognised for their efforts, even if they didn’t win. After all, everybody benefits from spending more time engaged in educational activities!”
To help kids keep motivated, the Literacy Planet team has included two cool features that are proving to be a big hit. Kids can:
• create custom leaderboards featuring ten of their own friends.
• collect and display a range of virtual badges to reward and recognise their effort and achievement.
