FOMC Boosts Wall Street
Posted on September 13, 2012 at 17:51 PM EDT
The stock market indices had a very big session today based on the FOMC, and most of the gains came after the FOMC spoke and indicated that would put some kind of liquidity or easing into the market. The day started out with a move up, then a little backing and filling, and just before the FOMC announcement they backed off to retest. They bounced right after the FOMC announcement. The Nasdaq 100 ran from 2794 all the way up to 2842 in about an hour and a half. The S&P 500 went from 1436 to 1464, and then in the last hour, they backed and filled, but closed very well. Net on the day, the Dow was up 206.51 at 13,539.51, about 34 points off the high but a vast majority of the gains were held today. The S&P 500 was up 23.43 to 1459.99, only 3 3/4 points off its high. The Nasdaq 100 was up 39.67 at 2831.35, 10 points off the high but a very, very nice gain today. Advance-declines were 4 to 1 positive on New York Stock Exchange, and 3 to 1 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was nearly 10 to 1 positive on New York, with total volume of a 800 million shares. Nasdaq traded over 1.8 billion, and had a 3 1/2 to 1 positive volume ratio. TheTechTrader.com board was active and much higher. Many stocks on our board were very strong. Leading the way today were Nasdaq 100 generals. Google Inc. (GOOG) was up 15.16 to 706.04. Apple Inc. (NOW) 2.52 to 37.57, and swing trade Amarin Corporation (AMRN) 87 cents to 14.19. Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices started out firm, consolidated before the FOMC meeting, and exploded on positive news from the FOMC in a 5-wave advance that peaked with an hour and a half to go. They then consolidated until the last hour, pulling back into the close, but firming right in the last 5 minutes to pad the gains. It was a big day for Wall Street with key breakouts across the board. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow. Good Trading! Harry
