The Craig School Launches Personalized Learning Program For Craig High School Students
PR Log - Aug 25, 2012 - LINCOLN PARK, N.J. – The Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) at Craig High School is a new program designed for each individual student.

“The goal of the PLP is to individualize each of our student’s high school experience by creating levels of self-awareness of how they learn and their personal aptitudes and academic strengths” shared Dr. Eric M. Caparulo, Director of Craig High School, a part of the prestigious Craig School. “This enables each student to be an active participant in setting, planning, and achieving their personal academic goals.”

The Personal Learning Program takes shape prior to students taking their first class in their freshman year in high school. An Individualized Learning Profile is developed with input from parents, teachers, and a review of a student’s academic history.  Combined with student input, the Learning Profile serves as the basis in establishing a personalized action plan containing learning goals and the action steps necessary to achieve those goals.  This collaborative process creates the self-awareness necessary to achieve the level of self-advocacy that a student needs to be successful in high school and beyond.  It also provides to students and their families a roadmap for career and college exploration.

“Each student is an active participant in not only setting their learning goals but also laying out the action steps necessary to achieve their goals and predicting and preparing for the potential obstacles that they might encounter” Dr. Caparulo added.  “In addition, each student is designated a COACH, a teacher who serves as an academic point person to students, parents, and faculty.  This COACH meets weekly with students to provide support, guidance, and updates on a student’s action plan for the school year.”

Another program component is Craig High’s Self-Program, a collective group of courses that progressively builds towards academic independence and self-advocacy.  Students begin their freshman year with Freshman Foundation which focuses on creating self-awareness through learning styles, aptitudes, and multiple intelligence inventories.  They learn about themselves with a specific focus on intra- and inter-personal skills.  Sophomore year they explore career options, interview skills, and resume development in their Sophomore Project course.  Junior year they focus on College and  Post Secondary searches.  It all comes together senior year in Senior Project where they focus on life in college.

“We want our students to be a part of the decision making process that is their future.  We as parents and educators can open the doors for them but they are the ones that must walk through. Knowing who you are, how you learn, and being as prepared as they can be will go a long way in helping our students finding the right program and make the right decisions after high school,” Caparulo said. “Our Personalized Learning Program at Craig High School provides our students with the blue print to make that happen.”
