PR Log - Aug 23, 2012 - Tampa, Fla. – During the 2012 calendar year we will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH can trace its roots to 1887, when a one-room laboratory was created within the Marine Hospital Service (MHS). Known originally as the Laboratory of Hygiene, it was reorganized in the 1930s into the National Institute of Health. The NIH is now made up of 27 institutes and centers, each with a specific research agenda, often focusing on particular diseases or body systems.
To coincide with this historic occasion, Our Nation’s Health: 125 Years of the National Institutes of Health is being released. The special anniversary publication will see broad circulation throughout various industries associated with the nation’s health system, as well as government, education, and research institutions. A high-quality, perfect-bound edition, the publication will detail the history of the NIH, its people, and its contributions to America’s health system. Our Nation’s Health will include interviews with Dr. Elias Zerhouni, the 15th director of the National Institutes of Health, as well as other leaders from health, education and government. Case studies and expert editorial will examine the current state of the health sector; look at budget priorities today; and detail NIH’s management of the nation’s health issues now and its future plans to continue to build a healthier nation.
The National Institutes of Health is the largest source of global health research in the world. NIH-funded research takes place at universities and institutions in all 50 states and through public-private partnerships around the world in more than 90 countries, fueling our economy and leading health breakthroughs that save lives.
The goal of the NIH is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, from a rare genetic disorder to the common cold. The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone.
