Hobart and William Smith Colleges Enable BYOD, Deliver Campus-wide Connectivity with Aruba Networks Wireless LAN

Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARUN) today announced that Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) are deploying a new Aruba wireless LAN that will allow students, faculty, staff and guests to use their personal mobile devices to access the HWS network and Internet campus-wide. The ambitious new 802.11n network, which is replacing an existing 802.11a/b/g wireless network from Meru Networks, is expected to cover all learning, work, living and recreational spaces on campus, and will expand upon the Colleges’ support of a bring your own device (BYOD) environment.

Located in Geneva, New York, on 195 acres in the heart of New York State’s Finger Lakes Region, Hobart and William Smith are independent liberal arts colleges distinctive for providing highly individualized educations. Wanting to ensure that their 2,200 students and 700 faculty and staff members, as well as visitors to campus, enjoy comprehensive access, network performance and device flexibility, the IT Services team at HWS launched an evaluation of available wireless solutions. After a thorough RFP process involving 18 vendors and a head-to-head review of solutions from 11 of these, HWS chose Aruba.

HWS will deploy 940 Aruba AP-134 and AP-135 802.11n access points (APs) and Aruba M3 Controller Modules. With the goal of delivering and supporting a high-performance wireless network, HWS will also deploy Aruba’s AirWave network management system. AirWave employs a user-centric approach to monitor network utilization, identify where the network is being accessed, the types of mobile devices in use and how much bandwidth is being consumed by specific devices. These capabilities are particularly crucial for HWS, given their desire to continue enabling an open, yet secure BYOD environment.

“The launch of our next generation wireless network and further enabling a BYOD environment are major objectives in the Colleges’ strategic plan, HWS 2015. The goal is to provide students, faculty, staff and visitors with a robust and seamless wireless experience,” said Fred Damiano, Chief Information Officer for Hobart and William Smith Colleges. “With the Aruba network, wireless access is available throughout the entire campus – including academic and administrative buildings, student residences, recreational spaces and outdoor venues. We’ve also been able to expand our BYOD strategy to accommodate the wide variety and increasing quantity of devices our students are bringing onto the network, including smart phones, tablets, e-readers, gaming devices and televisions.”

The Aruba wireless LAN will also enable a wide range of applications, including a new cloud-based learning management system that will be piloted this fall and a mobile HWS.EDU site for Apple iOS. Other applications include web-based student, human resource and finance systems, as well as room scheduling and housing applications.

With a Network and Systems Infrastructure team of just seven individuals, ease of management and robust diagnostics were critical factors for HWS in selecting a wireless solution. With the new Aruba wireless LAN and in particular, AirWave, HWS is able to manage the campus-wide wireless network with half of a dedicated IT staff resource. Aruba AirWave provides HWS with greatly improved visibility into and centralized management of the Colleges’ wireless network resources, so if a problem occurs, it can be quickly diagnosed and resolved. This information will allow HWS IT Services to better forecast future network growth patterns and needs, while helping them improve operations and manage security.

To accommodate guests’ wireless needs while protecting the Colleges’ intellectual property, HWS will employ a captive portal to vet students, faculty and staff before directing them to the secure internal private wireless network. The captive portal will provide device-specific instructions to connect using fingerprinting. Visitors to campus will be directed to a public wireless network to connect to the Internet.

“Hobart and William Smith Colleges are prime examples of institutions of higher learning leveraging advanced wireless networking technology to embrace and expand BYOD,” said Robert Fenstermacher, director of product and solutions marketing for Aruba. “By implementing an Aruba wireless LAN, HWS IT Services is working to provide services that their users expect while simplifying management and ensuring optimal network performance and security.”
