On the downside The Federal Aviation Administration proposed up to $162.4 million in fines against American Airlines for safety violations. U.S. Airways (NYSE: LCC) is interested in merging with AMR.McDermott International (NYSE: MDR) reported lower second quarter earnings even as revenue rose. Second quarter earnings slipped for FirstEnergy (NYSE: FE). In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 2 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 5 to 3 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks gained 6 points to 801.
