However, in North America, "an increasingly promotional environment led to lower growth than expected in factory stores," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lew Frankfort stated. Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE:LOW): On July 31, Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE:LOW) announced that the company has made a non-binding proposal to the Board of Directors of Canadian home improvement and hardware retailer RONA Inc. to buy all of the issued and outstanding common shares of RONA for C$14.50 in cash per share. The non-binding proposal was delivered to RONA Board Chairman, Mr. Robert Pare, on July 8th, 2012. RONA's Board asked Lowe's for additional time to consider the proposal but, subsequently, rejected it. By the end of Tuesday's trading, Lowe's shares closed lower by US$1.49 (or -5.55%) to US$25.37 with more than 22.72 million shares exchanged hands for the session, compared to its average volume of 12.96 million shares. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE:GT): For the second quarter of 2012, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE:GT) reported net income available to common shareholders was US$85 million, up from US$40 million in the 2011 quarter. Net sales for the same quarter were US$5.15 billion, dropped from net sales of US$5.62 billion in the prior-year quarter. By market close, shares of Goodyear Tire & Rubber trades have gone up 10.41% to US$11.45 with heavy volume traded, which was 2.6 times more than usual.
