In honor of “Better Sleep Month” this May, Mattress Firm, Inc., one of the nation’s largest specialty mattress retailers, and Protect-a-Bed, a leading provider of bedding protection launched a sleep survey to find out more about consumers’ sleep habits and perceptions.
In the national online poll, conducted in April 2012, 500 adults were asked a series of questions related to sleep habits, mattress comfort and age, and other factors that influence sleep. Survey results show an overwhelming majority of respondents believe a comfortable mattress is critical to a good night’s sleep.
Some of the key findings of the survey include:
Comfortable + Quality Mattress = Good Sleep
Poor sleep can have effects beyond the bedroom. In fact, 90 percent of respondents said that they are sore, tired, and cranky after a bad night’s sleep. The majority of respondents (73 percent) said they believe mattresses are important to getting a good night’s sleep, and 74 percent choose a mattress based on comfort, rather than appearance, brand, or even price. 61 percent said the main reason they purchased a new mattress was because their existing mattress was no longer comfortable. A shocking 70 percent even indicated that the quality of a mattress affects their love life.
New Mattress = Better Sleep
Ever wonder if a new mattress can really make a difference in your quality of sleep? If you said yes, you’re not alone. 70 percent of respondents believe they would sleep better if they had a new mattress, and according to the Better Sleep Council, they’re right. Replacing a mattress five or more years old with a new, quality mattress can significantly reduce bedtime discomforts such as shoulder and back pain, back stiffness, as well as significantly increase sleep quality and comfort.
New Mattress = Every 8 Years
If you can’t remember how old your mattress is; don’t be surprised. More than one-third of respondents claim they’ve had their mattress longer than 10 years. What is even more interesting is that 20 percent think it’s okay to keep a mattress until they begin to suffer from back pain. With Americans spending more than a third of their lives in bed, the quality and comfort of a mattress can significantly change over time. Just because the warranty may state otherwise, it’s important to replace a mattress every eight years for optimal support and comfort.
Memory Foam = More Comfort
Mattresses use technology just like many other products today. In fact, one of the most prevalent technologies in the bedding industry is memory foam. From the survey we found that 74 percent currently sleep on a traditional inner-spring/coil mattress, but surprisingly, 64 percent think they would sleep better on a memory foam bed.
“Consumers continue to recognize mattress comfort and quality are key factors in getting a good night’s sleep,” said Steve Stagner, Mattress Firm’s Chief Executive Officer. “They also are becoming more aware of the different ways a new mattress can positively impact various aspects of their lives. During the month of May, Better Sleep Month, Mattress Firm invites our guests to come in for a fun and educational experience that will help them select the best mattress for their needs.”
