Stocks avoided a sixth day of losses today: The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both logged 0.7% gains while the Nasdaq jumped 0.8%.

Alcoa (AA) beat big after hours last night, and with no other major companies reporting until Thursday, investors celebrated today: It ended up 6.2%, the Dow’s biggest gainer for the day.

The market also breathed a sigh of relief when European bond yields backed off their Tuesday highs, as the ECB hinted it may resume its sovereign-debt purchase program.

However, hopes aren’t high for this earnings season, so it remains to be seen if optimism will hold as big names, including Google (GOOG), Wells Fargo (WFC) and JPMorgan (JPM) report Thursday and Friday.
