March 9, 2012 – IBWIRE - KORDI(president: Kang Jung-Keuk) hosted an「International Symposium on Acclimatization and Establishment of KIOST(Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology) – Leading the New Ocean Era」 with the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, on Friday, March 9th, at Lotte Hotel of Sogong-dong, Seoul, as KIOST is ready to be established in July.
This symposium is arranged to share experience and future perspectives of professionals and experts of ocean science field in and out of the country and to obtain various opinions and concerns in establishing and managing KIOST.

During the symposium, distinguished experts and scholars from five advanced countries in ocean field(France, Germany, Japan, UK and USA) and domestic experts in the field made presentations. Dr. Seung-Yong Hong, vice-chairman of Presidential Advisory Council on Education, Science, and Technology, made a keynote speech about the future perspectives of R&D of ocean science and technology along with a partnership with KIOST.
After the presentations, participants had a heated discussion about ‘global trends of ocean science and technology and future perspectives’ and ‘vision and development strategies of KIOST.’
A person from KORDI expressed that “KIOST is aiming to be a world best ocean research institute in both management of the institute and create research outcomes, and we look forward to this symposium helpful in establishing fundamental direction of the institute.
Last February, the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs organized ‘Ad-Hoc Committee for KIOST Establishment’ chaired by the 2nd Vice-Minister of MLTM. As the Committee’s arm for implementation, an executive secretariat was created and has started its mission and responsibilities for carrying out the plan of establishing KIOST.
