San Diego Plastic Surgeon Dr. Steve Laverson Helping Patients Promote National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
PRWeb

According to estimations from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), 207,090 new cases of breast cancer will be identified in the United States in 2010. Without a cure, this number is expected to rise; meaning 1 in 8 women born today will be diagnosed with the disease. This October is the 26th annual celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), and Dr. Steve Laverson says he and his San Diego breast reconstruction (http://www.feelbeautiful.com/breast/breast-reconstruction-post-mastectomy/) practice are supporting the NBCAM message of awareness through prevention, education, and empowerment to fight the disease in the present to protect the women of the future.

Dr. Laverson is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and specializes in a number of breast surgery procedures, such as breast augmentation in San Diego (http://www.feelbeautiful.com/breast/augmentation-san-diego-ca/). In addition to enhancing a woman's figure and confidence with aesthetic surgery procedures, he says he and his staff at Feel Beautiful are dedicated to the NBCAM message and empowering women in any and every way possible. "For the breast cancer patient, this means rehabilitation after cancer treatment by focusing on restoration of the breasts as an important symbol of femininity."

At his San Diego plastic surgery (http://www.feelbeautiful.com/) practice, Dr. Laverson stresses the need for prevention with routine mammograms and advanced screenings, because by the time a patient is able to feel a lump, it already consists of billions of cells. "The chance for cure is greatest when the lesion is smallest, which is why early detection by mammography and other screening methods is extremely important." In addition, the NBCAM and Dr. Laverson say women need to be aware of several risk factors that can affect their chances of developing breast cancer, including how their family history, race, and ethnicity have been affected by the disease, as well as the need to lead a healthy lifestyle by maintaining an appropriate weight and limiting alcohol consumption. While concentrating on these areas of education and prevention cannot guarantee a cancer-free life, statistics show they can greatly reduce an individual's chance of developing breast cancer.

The NCI estimates that as of January 1, 2007, there were 2,591,855 women alive in the U. S. who had a history of breast cancer. With expanding research and technologically advancing treatment methods, survival rates are expected to continue to rise. Dr. Laverson says that while breast reconstruction may be necessary following a mastectomy, which typically includes a combination of procedures for breast surgery in San Diego (http://www.feelbeautiful.com/breast/), nearly 70% of women presenting for mastectomy are never informed about the option of a post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. "The process of reconstructing a woman's breasts can help them recover both physically and psychologically from cancer and cancer treatment."

As Dr. Laverson and his patients celebrate NBCAM this October and help promote the organization's message, he says the best quality reconstructive results with the least amount of risk and discomfort are possible when the process involves thorough patient education, a frank discussion of all options available, and a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience with breast reconstruction.
