Medical Clinics Profitability Threatened Due High Waste Stream Disposal Costs
Large Waste Companies are buying competitors and eliminating options for medical facilities.

Over the past twenty years, a steady stream of, waste companies have been bought by larger corporations eliminating major competition. BFI, one of the nation’s largest solid waste companies was purchased by Allied Waste. IPSA , one of the largest document shredding companies was purchased by Cintas and Stericycle, the nation’s largest medical waste company, has purchased BFI’s medical waste division, Commodore Medical, Enserve, Health Care Waste Solutions and many others.

The elimination of these and other competitors has led to increased prices and unhappy customers. Thousands of medical facilities all over the country are facing a situation of having little choice but to employ the services of these large waste companies at prices higher than they can afford and signing contracts that seem to have no end. Some waste companies use contractual language that allows for price increases at the discretion of the vendor without any advance notice to the customer.

Many medical facilities managers are not equipped to negotiate with these waste companies and do not have the time to fully investigate options. This is just what waste companies are banking on. Medical facilities are lured by the prospect of a low price, only to find out later that the price quoted does not include the additional fees imposed at billing.

Waste Advocate, comprised of retired executives, is making a difference for medical facilities all over the country. “Our phone lines are ringing off the wall” stated Mr. Gary Gilliam, a veteran in the waste industry of 20 years. Waste Advocate has designed a low cost program to assist medical facilities with contractual issues, high costs and service problems. Mr. Andrew Hess, a retired executive for Bridgestone states, “ This program is working and working well, resolving the issues faced by medical facilities”.

The Waste Advocate program is drawing the attention of GPO’s, and various waste companies from all over the country willing to assist. Waste Advocate has a web site designed to provide additional information to medical facilities www.wasteadvocate.com.
