New Products Might Have Prevented Massive Salmonella Recall for Eggs

Miami, Florida (WiredPRNews): New products from EGS, Inc. might have prevented the recent salmonella outbreak that resulted in a recall of about a half billion eggs, according to John Comp, EGS Senior Vice President for the Mid-Atlantic Region. This outbreak has quadrupled the number of reported salmonella sickness claims since May, according to an article from SFGate. It is estimated the recall alone will cost the egg producer about $60 million, not taking into account legal and insurance costs.

Mr. Comp explains, “Eggs which are properly treated with Preserv Post Harvest Wash during the packaging process will continue to provide extended protection against salmonella and other food-borne pathogens for up to twenty one days. Similarly, giving hens drinking water treated with Evicol and/or misting their environment drastically lowers the chances that the eggs will be contaminated in the first place.”

Preserv and Evicol are unique in this ability to provide continual residual protection on raw agricultural commodities and EnviroGreen Global Solutions is redoubling its outreach efforts to the poultry industry in the hopes of preventing future incidents like this. As Mr. Comp explains, "There are no other products on the market which can safely and effectively eliminate so many food-borne pathogens and continue to defend against them for weeks. In addition, Preserv and Evicol avoid the problems associated with antibiotic resistance because they kill bacteria by interfering with their metabolic processes rather than poisoning them.”

Both Preserv and Evicol are safe (EPA-approved with exemption from tolerance status for human consumption), highly cost-effective due to the residual protection they afford, and easy to use without the need for expensive equipment. Dr. David Rakofsky, EGS’s Chief Operational Officer, adds, “Our application for organic certification has just been approved, and organic egg producers are particularly excited about the possibility of having a truly effective solution to bacterial contamination problems.”
