According to Bernard Schmitt, "On Friday, continued concerns about the nation's economy weighed down the markets. The markets closed lower as the yen rallied against the dollar. The Japanese yen rose 1 percent versus the dollar to an 11-week high. The benchmark 10-year Treasury bond gained 9/32 to 100 28/32, yielding 4.516%. Oil futures turned lower, with the April contract falling 36 cents to close at $61.64 a barrel. April gold futures continued to fall, losing $21 to $644.10 an ounce. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted, taking its largest weekly percentage decline since March 2003. The Dow closed down 120.24 points, or almost 1%, at 12,114.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index slid 36.21 points, or 1.51 percent, to 2,368.00. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 16.00 points, or 1.14 percent, to 1,387.17. The Russell 2000 index finished down 1.97 percent. For the week, the Russell 2000 index lost 6.2 percent."
