Living in Poverty: 40 Million Americans, Including Children and Working Poor

Poverty is growing in the recession, with nearly 40 million Americans -- or 13.2% of the U.S. population -- living at or below the official poverty level in 2008, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That figure includes more than 14 million children and a growing class of "working poor."
