InHouston launches networking group exclusively for new grads
(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 31, 2010 ) InHouston, one of Houston's largest professional networking organizations, launched InHouston Graduates on July 20, 2010 to cater specifically to new college graduates.
InHouston Graduates, like its parent organization, consists of both online and offline resources and is completely free to join. The online community features a discussion board and a feed from the New Grad Life blog which offers tips on interview etiquette, building a resume and networking. Offline, InHouston Graduates will host regular networking mixers and training opportunities and provide support for grads in their job search or entrepreneurial developments.
The group started when InHouston member Michele Yanta, a senior consultant at Career Partners International of Houston, recognized that despite Houston being ranked number one in job growth for the past five years, many recent grads were still struggling in their job searches.
We set up a two-day seminar for recent grads at my company and I asked my online network for helpful advice to give them, says Yanta. Roger Thaxton, a Houston CPA, saw my request and suggested we start a group for these young people as an ongoing resource. I thought it was a great idea.
Yanta and Thaxton then instantly contacted Eric Standlee, founder of InHouston, and asked him for help in launching the new group as part of the InHouston network.
Roger and Michele shared their concern with me about the job market for recent graduates and I wanted to help make a difference, says Standlee. I see a large number of graduates and others come through InHouston and am very interested in helping this growing demographic figure out the things they need to find jobs, start businesses and get out into the marketplace.
More specific information on InHouston Graduates and upcoming events can be found online at http://inhouston.ning.com/group/inhoustongraduates or by contacting co-founder Michele Yanta at micheleyanta@ymail.com.
InHouston is a volunteer-run, Houston-area social network of over 13,000 members that focuses on a pay-it-forward networking style, also called servant leadership. Originally founded in 2007 on LinkedIn by local business owner Eric Standlee, the group is a part of the larger InCity network that includes similar organizations in Dallas, Austin, Washington D.C., and Atlanta. In addition to a robust online community, InHouston hosts monthly mixers and workshops around the Greater Houston area. InHouston's largest monthly event, the Uptown Mixer, consistently draws between 300 and 500 attendees. More information on the group and upcoming events can be found at http://inhouston.ning.com.
